The Archbishop of Hong Kong, the Most Revd Dr Paul Kwong, accompanied by the Very Revd Matthias Der, the Dean of Hong Kong, and Professor Gareth Jones, the Dean of Ming Hua Theological College have concluded a very busy official visit to the Church of Ireland.
They were invited by the Archbishop of Dublin and the Dublin University Far East Mission (DUFEM). The delegation’s first engagement was a lunch hosted by the Revd Darren McCalling, Dean of Residence and Chaplain in TCD, followed by a short welcome reception with music by the staff and students of the DIT Conservatory, led by Dr Kerry Houston, in St Patrick’s Deanery hosted by the Dean, the Very Revd Victor Stacey.
On Wednesday Archbishop Kwong joined the Archbishop of Dublin to meet school principals in the See House, before going on to meet the staff and students at the Church of Ireland Theological Institute. In the evening Archbishop Kwong and Dean Der addressed the Dublin and Glendalough Diocesan Synods on aspects of becoming a Province of the Anglican Communion (Hong Kong being the youngest provice in the Communion) and on social action projects carried out from St John’s Cathedral in Hong Kong. On Thursday evening the delegation attended Evensong at TCD Chapel where Archbishop Kwong gave a short address.
Following a visit to Belfast on Friday the group was hosted by the Dean of Christ Church Cathedral, the Very Revd Dermot Dunne, on Satruday evening while Archbishop Kwong preached in the cathedral on Sunday morning. The Very Revd Mathias Der preached in St Patrick’s Cathedral. On Sunday afternoon both visitors attended the Swift Service at St Patrick’s Cathedral where the preacher was the Revd Dr Alan McCormack, Rector of St Botolph without Bishopsgate and St Vedast Alias Foster in the City London.
