B Theol

Most full time ordinands study for the degree of Bachelor of Theology (B.Th.) of the University of Dublin (Trinity College). This course (which may also be taken at diploma level) is of three years' duration and is the usual requirement for ordination in the Church of Ireland for stipendiary ministry. Admission to the course is by the normal matriculation requirements of the university, with special conditions for mature students over twenty-five years of age. Students who obtain a high standard in the second and third year may apply to continue their studies for a fourth year leading to the degree of Bachelor of Theology with Honours.

Teaching for these courses is shared by the staff of the college and the School of Hebrew, Theological and Biblical Studies in Trinity College. Lectures are given in both institutions.

The course is divided into three broad areas: Theological Studies, Biblical Studies and Pastoral Studies. Within each of these areas students will cover a range of different courses and teaching and learning will take various forms, from Parish placements to classroom lectures and seminars.

Students with previous qualifications in biblical, theological, or pastoral studies may be exempted from certain sections of the B.Th. syllabus and allowed to complete the course in two years. Application for exemptions should be made following acceptance for ordination training.

Full details of the B.Th. may be found in the Calendar of University of Dublin. Members of the academic staff are always willing to be of assistance in talking through course options, matriculation requirements etc and it is the Principal, in conjunction with the House of Bishops, who gives approval to the course of study followed by each student.
