The RCB Library is beside the gates of the Theological Institute. It offers an excellent service and should be able to cover all your needs. It is the principal theological and reference library of the Church of Ireland and the major repository for the church’s archives and manuscripts.
The book stock and range of periodicals are available for consultation. Most books can be taken out on loan and can be posted. The library seeks to acquire all published material by or relating to the Church of Ireland. Church of Ireland archives, principally from the Republic of Ireland, which are no longer required in their original custody, are deposited in the library as are a wide variety of ecclesiastical manuscripts.
The main functions of the Library are:
• to serve the needs of those selected for ministerial training in the Church of Ireland
• to assist in the continuing Christian education of clergy and laity
• to act as a reference library for those seeking information about the Church of Ireland
• to provide a repository in which the archives and manuscripts of the church can be stored, arranged and made available to researchers in a systematic fashion.
There are now some 40,000 volumes in the Library, principally on theology, ethics, biblical studies, spirituality, homiletics, pastoralia, liturgy, mission, history, comparative religion and biography. The major theological journals are taken. Items not available in the library can be obtained for members through inter library loan. Records from parishes, dioceses and cathedrals and the non–current records of the General Synod and the Representative Church Body have been transferred to the Library, although some records remain in local custody. The manuscript collection includes papers of prominent clergy and laity and records of Church of Ireland organisations and societies. Advice is available on the location and extent of church archives which are not deposited in the Library, and the conditions under which such material may be consulted.
Students in the Church of Ireland Theological College have free membership of the RCB Library during their time at College. After ordination, an annual fee of €5 or life membership of €40 is payable (subject to change).
